What Is Lenticular Printing and How Does It Bring Event Photos to Life?

You’ve probably held one of these photo prints before: tilt the card one way, and an image smiles, tilt it the other, and it winks, or it shifts entirely into something new.

That effect has a name: lenticular printing.

While the basic concepts of lenticular effects date back to the 1940s and it has since appeared on trading cards, album covers, film posters, and retail packaging. What’s newer is finding it live at events, where guests receive a personalized lenticular print made on the spot during a photo booth session.

How Lenticular Printing Works

Lenticular printing is a specialty process that combines the following:

  • The Interlaced Image: This includes a ribbed plastic lens sheet to produce a print that appears to move, shift, or show depth at different viewing angles. xxx
  • The Lenticular Lens: When placed over an interlaced image, it directs light from specific image strips to the viewer’s eye based on the viewer’s angle of view.

Instead of being static, the image responds to how the viewer holds it. What’s more, the technique has been used across large-format advertising, collectibles, and retail packaging since the mid-20th century.

How Do You Make a Lenticular Print?

The lenticular effect comes from two variables working in precise alignment: the interlaced image and the lens sheet placed over it. The process also produces two main visual outputs:

  • A 3D depth effect (showing slightly different perspectives of the same scene)
  • A flip or motion effect (switching between two or more distinct images as the card tilts)

Lenticular prints are produced through:

  • Interlacing: Source images are sliced into narrow vertical strips and sequenced into a single composite file. The order of those strips determines what the viewer sees at each angle.
  • Printing: The interlaced image is printed at high resolution, either onto paper bonded to the lens sheet or directly onto the plastic surface via UV printing.
  • Lens Alignment: The lenticular sheet is placed precisely over the printed image so each lens sits over the correct strip. Even slight misalignment disrupts the effect entirely, which is why accuracy matters at every stage.

Are Lenticular and Holographic Prints the Same Thing?

While the terms “lenticular” and “holographic” are often used interchangeably in photo prints, they’re not the same. The confusion usually occurs because both produce shifting, eye-catching visuals and are used as premium keepsakes and collectibles.

Here’s how the two differ:

  • Holographic PrintsThese use light diffraction to create a rainbow-like sheen or floating image effect, relying on how light wavelengths interact with a specially treated surface.
  • Lenticular Prints: These work through the physical geometry of a lens, showing different images at different angles. The effect is structural, not light-based.

The Cheese Effects 3D animated card, for instance, goes by several names, including magic changing card, Harry Potter print, and holographic print. But the technically correct term for the lens-based effect it uses is lenticular.

How Cheese Effects Brings Lenticular Printing to Live Events

How Cheese Effects Brings Lenticular Printing to Live Events

Cheese Effects’ 3D GIF Animated Print is a live-event application of lenticular printing, where guests receive a personalized card made on the spot during their photo booth session.

The process also combines digital capture with hands-on craftsmanship:

  • Guests are photographed (either three sequential shots or a short boomerang video)
  • The images are processed and printed
  • On-site staff then manually attach the lenticular lens to the print

Sessions take approximately 30 seconds, plus 10 seconds for lens attachment. Available animated print formats include:

  • Moving Effect (Boomerang): Images extracted from a boomerang GIF produce a smooth looping motion effect.
  • 3D EffectImages extracted from a 180-degree multi-angle capture create spatial depth.
  • 3-Image Flip (GIF): Three sequential photos flip through as the card tilts.
  • Branded Flip Variants: One or two guest photos combined with a brand logo page.

All packages include unlimited sessions and prints. The compact 4″ x 4″ format works just as well at outdoor and open-air events as it does in ballrooms and conference halls.

Unlike a flat print from most photo booth setups, the lenticular card is tactile and interactive. Guests handle this photo keepsake repeatedly and show it to others, extending the event impression well beyond the venue.

A Keepsake That Keeps Moving

Lenticular printing turns a flat photograph into something that moves, shifts, and surprises, and that quality is what makes it work as an event keepsake. While a standard print goes into a bag, a lenticular card goes into a conversation.

Whether the goal is a distinctive wedding favor, a branded corporate giveaway, or simply something guests haven’t encountered at a photo booth before, the 3D animated card delivers a moment people keep, share, and talk about.
